Lech Wałęsa – born 29 September 1943 is a Polish pro-democracy activist, elder statesman and union organizer who served as the first democratically elected President of the Republic of Poland from 1990 to 1995.
An electrician who became the leader of Solidarity freedom-oriented movement and trade-union for which he received the 1983 Nobel Peace Prize. His non-violent struggle has eventually brought the end to communism in Europe.
